The autumn school break — høstferie in week 40–41 for Norwegians, half-term in late October for the British — has a reputation as the consolation holiday: too late for the beach, too early for the slopes. The reputation is wrong, and the physics explain why. The sea cools far more slowly than the air. By mid-October the Mediterranean's water is still carrying September's warmth — 23–25°C across its southern and eastern reaches, identical to mid-July — while the air has dropped from punishing to perfect and the August crowds are a memory. For families specifically, it's arguably the best value-to-quality window of the whole year.

The honest framing: this is a southern and eastern Mediterranean play. The northwest Med (mainland Spain, the Riviera) has gone autumnal by late October. Go south, go east, or go Atlantic-subtropical.

The warm-water tier — sea at 24°C+

Cyprus is October's family headline: 26–27°C days, a sea at 24–25°C (the warmest in Europe this month), shallow family beaches at Coral Bay and Protaras, and the October guide's top placement. Antalya matches the water (24°C) and undercuts everyone's bill — the Turkish riviera's five-star family machines run at half Balearic prices in October, and the ruins-radius finally sits at child-tolerable walking temperatures.

Rhodes and Crete hold 23–24°C air with a 23°C sea — the Greek season's last full month, with the caveat that some resort infrastructure starts winding down in the final week of October. Book the bigger resort towns, not the remote coves.

Hurghada and Sharm sit just outside the Med conversation and above it on water temperature: 27–30°C days, a 26°C sea, and snorkelling that turns a family beach week into a wildlife trip. The five-hour flight and resort-compound format are the trade.

The reliability tier — Atlantic steadiness

The Canaries open their winter season in October: 25–26°C, sea at a respectable 22°C, and the only entry on this list where a late booking carries near-zero weather risk in either half-term week. Tenerife South and Gran Canaria have the deepest family infrastructure; Fuerteventura has the beaches.

Madeira runs 23–24°C with a 22–23°C sea — the family version trades sand (scarce) for levada walks, lava pools and whale boats. Better for outdoorsy families than bucket-and-spade ones, said plainly.

The pricing reality

School-holiday weeks price as school-holiday weeks — the same Cyprus resort runs 25–35% above the September shoulder. The judo available to Norwegians: høstferie's week 40–41 lands before the British late-October half-term, so Nordic families get the same destinations a notch cheaper and quieter. Brits get the inverse advantage in reverse. Either way, October's premium is gentler than February's or Easter's — and the weather you're buying is objectively better than either.
