December has the best weather map of the northern winter and the worst pricing calendar of the year. Hurricane season closes and the Caribbean reopens with clean reefs and trade winds. Thailand's Andaman coast peaks. The Maldives hit brochure settings. And from roughly the 18th of December to the 3rd of January, everything on this list charges its annual maximum — often double the early-December rate for the same room.

So the honest December strategy has two versions: travel in the first two weeks and take the year's best value-to-weather ratio, or accept the Christmas premium with open eyes. Our climate study recommends 21 destinations either way.

The ten for December

1. Tenerife South · 23°C · sea 21°C

The default answer for a reason: four hours, EU roaming, dependable 22–24 on the south coast. December's trap is pricing, not weather — early month is shoulder-priced, Christmas week is Caribbean-priced without the Caribbean.

2. Gran Canaria · 23°C · sea 21°C

Maspalomas's dune-backed beach does midwinter better than anywhere else in Europe's reach. The sea at 21 is the deal's fine print: swimmable, briefly, in the afternoon. Honest expectations, excellent month.

3. Fuerteventura · 23°C · sea 20°C

The windsurf island calms down in December just enough for everyone else. The big empty beaches (Sotavento, Cofete) are the point — this is the Canary for space, not nightlife.

4. Hurghada · 24°C · sea 23°C

The Red Sea's winter: sunny and dry, 23–25 by day, genuinely cool after dark. The reef does not take winters off. Five and a half hours, and early-December fares are the year's quiet bargain.

5. Phuket · 31°C · sea 28°C

High season at full throttle: flat Andaman sea, island-hopping weather daily, everything open. Pricing climbs through the month toward the New Year peak — the first two weeks are the smart window.

6. Krabi · 31°C · sea 28°C

Same season, quieter geometry: Railay's karst cliffs, the four-island longtail circuit, Tonsai for the climbers. December is the month the postcard was taken.

7. The Maldives · 30°C · sea 28°C

The northeast monsoon's dry side arrives — December opens the season the overwater bungalows charge for. The honest budget version is a guesthouse island (Maafushi, Dhigurah) plus public ferry: the same sea at a tenth of the resort rate.

8. Barbados · 29°C · sea 27°C

Hurricane season formally ends and the study lifts its flag. December Barbados is the Caribbean working as advertised: trade-wind afternoons, the west coast's calm water, and a direct-flight map that improves every winter.

9. Cape Town · 26°C · sea 14°C

Full southern summer. The sea stays cold — that never changes — but everything else peaks: long evenings, the winelands in season, Boulders Beach penguins indifferent to your itinerary. Book December accommodation months out; Capetonians holiday at home.

10. Aruba · 30°C · sea 28°C

The year-round entry finishing its lap: below the hurricane belt in autumn, dry and 30 in December, the same reliable trade wind. If you want the Caribbean with the least weather risk on the calendar, this stays the answer.

Skip these in December

• Bali. The wet monsoon's core month — the study flags it. The dry-season version of Bali is in the July list.
• The Mediterranean, for swimming. Alicante and the Spanish coast carry the study's cold-sea flag: 17-degree water, fine city weather. A walking destination now, and priced like one — fair deal if that's what you're buying.
• Mahé, Seychelles. December is the rainy transition between trade winds. January onward dries out; the Maldives do December better.
