The Western Med ran a continuous marine heatwave from May 2022 into spring 2023, the longest in 40 years, and the median surface temperature touched 28.9°C in August 2024. Floridia, Sicily holds Europe's all-time record of 48.8°C (Aug 2021). The sea crosses 21°C in early-to-mid June and stays warm through mid-October. Late September through mid-October is the genuinely under-the-radar window — sea 23–25°C, no heat risk, prices down a third.
