Everything else is either too hot, too crowded, too expensive, or all three — because August is when Europe's school calendars, Italy's factory holidays and the heatwave season all land on the same four weeks.

The Atlantic coast is the structural answer to August: the ocean caps the air temperature at livable. Biarritz in August is busy — it's France in August — but busy at 26 degrees beats quiet at 40.

2. San Sebastián · 25°C · sea 22°C

The Basque option, same logic, better eating. August brings Semana Grande mid-month: fireworks over the bay every night for a week. Book months ahead or stay in Hondarribia and bus in.

3. Funchal, Madeira · 25°C · sea 22°C

Madeira's warmest stretch, still ten degrees below the Med's worst. The Monte cable car queue is the only real crowd on the island. The sea hits its annual high — 22, honest Atlantic — and the lido culture makes the most of it.

4. Sopot · 22°C · sea 20°C

The Baltic's belle-époque resort does August like the Med did the 1970s: warm enough to swim if you commit, a pier promenade, fried fish, no heat stress whatsoever. The contrarian pick for families who'd rather build sandcastles at 23 than queue for shade at 38.

5. Zanzibar · 28°C · sea 25°C

Dry season continues. August is Zanzibar's sweet spot: kusi trade winds for the kiters, calm mornings on the north beaches, and humidity the Mediterranean traveller will register as luxury.

6. Mauritius · 25°C · sea 24°C

Southern winter, which on Mauritius means dry, green and mid-20s. The lagoon stays warmer than the Atlantic destinations on this list. Honeymoon pricing dips in August; the weather doesn't justify the discount, but take it.

7. Bali · 29°C · sea 27°C

Still bone-dry. August is peak season for a reason: every outdoor plan works. The crowd problem is real in the south — the study's recommendation survives because Bali outside Canggu and Kuta is a different island.

8. Koh Samui · 30°C · sea 28°C

The Gulf side of Thailand keeps dodging the monsoon that drowns the Andaman coast all August. Mango sticky rice weather. Watch the bag fees on the Bangkok connection; the fare is rarely the whole price.

9. Aruba · 31°C · sea 28°C

The Caribbean island that sits below the hurricane belt — that single fact makes Aruba the only Caribbean entry the study allows between June and November. Constant trade wind, dry cactus landscape, Dutch-organised everything.

10. Brighton · 21°C · sea 19°C

Yes, really. The study tracks what delivers, and an English seafront at 22 with festival energy delivers more good hours outdoors in August than a Greek island at 39. Swim briefly, lie about enjoying it, eat well. It counts.

What August costs you in the Med

The famous absences: Santorini, Amalfi, Ibiza, Athens, the Turkish coast. All flagged for heat, crowds or both. You'd pay the year's highest rates to queue in its highest temperatures. The meltemi gives the Cyclades bearable air but grounds ferries for days — a fine trade until it's your ferry.

August is also the month the cooler lists earn their keep: hot, but not too hot for the Atlantic's 24–28°C, the shade list for the genuine escape, and the heatwave playbook if you're already booked and the forecast turns ugly.
