Santorini
Stay in Imerovigli, not Oia. Same caldera sunset, 30–40% less. Meltemi wind July–August is real.
Sunny every day, no rain, no heat spikes. The week to book.
Days 1–5 are usually reliable, 6–10 drift, 11–14 are the model guessing. Check again the day before you fly — more on what this can and can't do.

When to go
From the 2026 climate study, not the live forecast.Structural odds, not a verdict — the live forecast can still surprise either way.
The Cyclades August clash is hot, windy, and very expensive. The meltemi keeps temperatures bearable in the islands but grounds ferries for days at a time. Stay in Imerovigli, not Oia — same sunset, 30–40% cheaper. Late May through mid-June and mid-September to mid-October are the only sensible windows.

Where to stay
Hand-picked across budget tiers. We'd book any of these ourselves — the budget pick is genuinely good, not just cheap.
Caldera-edge suites with private plunge pools, same sunset as Oia, 30–40% less. Adults-only.
The Imerovigli-over-Oia move pays for itself by night two. Astra is the most polished of the Imerovigli cluster.
See live prices on Booking →Oia village without the front-row caldera markup. Hand-carved stone, small pool, 8-minute walk to the famous sunset spot.
Honest mid-range pricing for Santorini — most 'mid-range' here is actually luxury-priced by Greek standards.
See live prices on Booking →Fira centre, not on the caldera but two blocks back. Heated pool, full breakfast, walkable to everything.
The smart budget play: Fira base, sunset trip out to Imerovigli or Oia. You give up the room view; you get a real budget price.

Stay in Imerovigli, walk to Oia just for one sunset
1h€€Oia gets the famous sunset and roughly 2 million day-trippers a year. The sunset is still beautiful; the experience of watching it elbow-to-elbow with a thousand strangers is less so. Stay in Imerovigli, get the same caldera view 30–40% cheaper, walk to Oia for one sunset if you want the famous vantage point, walk back to your quieter hotel for dinner.
Dinner at Metaxi Mas in Exo Gonia
2.5h€€The canonical answer to "where do locals actually eat on Santorini". Old wine cellar, grill-heavy menu, locals bringing their parents. Reservations are difficult in peak summer — call the morning of the day you want to go.
Assyrtiko tasting at Santo Wines
2h€€Santorini grows Assyrtiko, a white grape with high acidity that thrives in volcanic soil. The vines are pruned into circular baskets (kouloura) — a 2,000-year-old technique still in use. Santo Wines has the best tasting setup with a panoramic view; Estate Argyros is the more serious version for people who want to learn.
Do not rent a quad or ATV
Accident rates on Santorini's narrow cliff roads are notorious. One fatal crash a month is the depressing average across the Cyclades in summer. Check your travel insurance before considering it — most don't cover quad accidents.
Do not ride donkeys up the Fira cliff steps
They're overworked. Take the cable car instead — it's €6, runs every 20 minutes, and treats the animals decently.

Common questions about Santorini
When is the best time to visit Santorini?
May–June and September–October are when we'd go. Skip July–August: peak crowds and peak prices. The live forecast on this page shows what the next two weeks look like.
Is Santorini worth visiting in June?
Yes. June sits inside the best stretch (May–June and September–October). Once your dates fall within the next two weeks, the forecast above gives you the real picture.
Is Santorini good in July?
We'd go another month: July means peak crowds and peak prices. Locked dates? It still works if you book far ahead and brace for peak prices.
