Lake Como

Italy

Pre-Alpine lake at 200m elevation. The lake itself stays swimmable June through September (22–24°C), surrounding mountains keep nights cool, and the villages — Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio — are operatic.

Recommended

The lake tempers heat — Como at the southern tip stays 3–4°C cooler than Milan in heatwaves, while Bellagio and Varenna further up are cooler still. Best months are late May to June and September: warm enough to swim, mild evenings, mountain hikes accessible. July and August are busy and warm but never hit Mediterranean heat-risk levels. The ferry system connects every village; the Bellagio–Varenna–Menaggio triangle is the canonical route.
