Faro
Tied with Rhodes for Europe's sunniest coast. Short hop, mild Atlantic heat, the Ria Formosa ferry is the hack the package tourists miss.
Sunny every day, no rain, no heat spikes. The week to book.
Days 1–5 are usually reliable, 6–10 drift, 11–14 are the model guessing. Check again the day before you fly — more on what this can and can't do.

When to go
From the 2026 climate study, not the live forecast.Long shoulder seasons. April–June and September–October are sweet — warm enough to swim, no school crowds. July and August are hot but workable; the Atlantic side stays a few degrees cooler than the Med.

Where to stay
Hand-picked across budget tiers. We'd book any of these ourselves — the budget pick is genuinely good, not just cheap.
10 km north of Faro in the village of Estoi — a rococo palace converted to a 63-room pousada. Gardens, pool, formal dining room. The kind of place where breakfast runs until noon.
The Algarve's best value at its price tier. €250–350 in shoulder season buys you an actual palace experience.
See live prices on Booking →In Faro centre on the marina, rooftop pool with ria views, spa. 9.1 across 1,400+ recent reviews. Walkable to everything; bus 16 stop outside for the airport.
One of the few Faro centre hotels that feels like a hotel rather than an apartment block. The rooftop is the differentiator.
See live prices on Booking →Marina-front, simple but well-kept rooms, small rooftop with lounge chairs. 8.4 across 3,000+ reviews — that review count matters; outliers wash out at that volume.
About as cheap as Faro's centre gets without drifting into hostel territory.

Take the Ria Formosa ferry to Farol or Culatra
5h€Directly in front of the old town, a 60 km lagoon stretches along the coast. Five inhabited islands; three are car-free fishing villages reachable only by ferry. Ferries leave from Faro's Porta Nova dock, cost €2–4, take 20–40 min. Farol has a lighthouse and one beachfront restaurant; Culatra has a proper village — fishermen's cottages, three or four seafood restaurants, kids playing football in the sand. Almost no one doing a packaged Algarve holiday finds this — it's genuinely one of the best things you can do on a European sun trip.
Cataplana de marisco at Restaurante Camané
2h€€Cataplana — seafood steamed in a hinged copper pot with tomato, onion, coriander, and white wine — is the Algarve's signature dish. The pot is the dish; the technique came with the Moors 1,000 years ago and is still made by hand in Loulé. Restaurante Camané at Praia de Faro is where the locals actually go; €22–35 for a cataplana for two. The touristy versions in the marina area cost €45 and are worse.
Day trip to Tavira by train
6h€45 minutes east by train, €3 each way. Arguably prettier than Faro: Roman bridge, salt flats, octopus restaurants. The article frames it as the Algarve day-trip to prioritise.
Day trip to Silves Moorish castle
4h€45 minutes north by train, €2 each way. Red sandstone Moorish castle, medieval old town, inland — a different feel from the coast. Good for a half-day if you want the historical Algarve.
Day trip to Lagos by train
7h€€90 minutes west by train, €7 each way. The dramatic sea-cliff coastline with Benagil Cave. The most-photographed Algarve coast — but also the most-photographed-by-others.
